This error message keeps on popping up!!!! there is no end!!!
"FrostWire is unable;e to connect to hosts on the Gnutella network. This is most often due to firewalls or content-filtering software blocking access to Gnutella (port6346). Please review your firewall’s options to allow FrostWire to access the Gnutella network or speak to your system administrator or ISP to determine if Gnutella traffic is being filtered." What do I do about this? please some answers?! thanks
Do you have any software firewalls in use? Check for Windows Firewall. Adjust settings for Frostwire or allow all traffic for it.
Do you have NAT enabled in your modem? You can check this either in modem settings, or by checking your IP address in Start > Run > type "cmd" sans quotes > type "ipconfig" also without the "". If your IP is something like 192.168 then you are behind NAT and need to forward the ports used by Frostwire in your modem settings.
Check this link for help with port forwarding http://portforward.com/
Also, if you are using this on school/work computer, there is a possibility that network-level firewall/content filtering is blocking connections.
Also, try the following advice about replacing gnutella.net file from Frostwire support forum http://www.frostwire.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2884
HTH
I’d like a free anti-virus and firewall for my pc. I am using Vista.
Thank you very much!
If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It’s cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
I advise against Norton anti-virus, it’s bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).
Comodo Firewall Pro is the best free firewall. Windows firewall only blocks incoming traffic. It does not stop outbound traffic – it wasn’t designed too. According to Microsoft, your anti-virus is responsible for detecting any type of malware (which could potentially send your private information to hackers without your knowledge).
Comodo Firewall Pro includes proactive malware defense for free. This will only help keep you safer. I also recommend Firefox, it’s a far better and safer alternative to Internet Explorer. If you add-on McAfee SiteAdvisor, it will warn you of potentially harmful sites.
Many people think any norton product is bloated and slow. That was right… a couple years ago.
WAKE UP!
We are in 2008!
Norton has improved greatly: on my vista computer (you read that right, vista), it is never slow, and not once have I noticed any bugs and slowdowns. (I don’t have a supercomputer, just a typical $600 store PC)
no wonder it recieved editor’s choice:

http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-security-and-firewall/norton-360/4505-3667_7-32330411.html
Why do people still think it is bloated and ineffective when they are making their judgements on years old info.
Thanks for the info

I have free COMODO, but it is a pain is the butt sometimes.
When I’m downloading it’ll come on a dozen times asking me if I want it allowed. I like it except for this.
Are there any other free firewall that is not as annoying?
Windows firewall and ZoneAlarm free are really poor, so poor they don’t even get tested at Matousec any more
http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php
OnlineArmor (free version) is about the same level as Comodo but is much more user-friendly and doesn’t try to push the Ask Toolbar or anything else on you.

For instance,
I am running an Internet security software, which includes firewall protection.
However, I would like to run a separate firewall, one which includes more features.
If this is possible, any recommendations?
yes why not
MSN offers a free firewall package through McAfee. I haven’t seen such an offer from ATT Yahoo. The cost of such packages can make the difference between my selection of ISP providers. Please let me know if I have overlooked your free firewall option.
No.
I have ATT. They offer a protection suite free which includes spyware and virus protection. No firewall.

I am using the Windows Firewall. The ones below are much better.

Do not install the "AT&T Yahoo! Browser" it will cause problems. You don’t need it. I also avoided "AT&T Yahoo! Music Jukebox" just another online music store.
I also installed Windows Defender (free). Greatly improved my spyware protection. ATT spyware protection is poor. I am using both spyware programs.

I also recommend installing the following (5) to your system, all free.
Run weekly or at least monthly.
Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Do not enable Tea Timer and SDHelper After installation: update + scan + immunize
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)
http://www.superantispyware.com/
CCleaner:
Install options. Do not install toolbar or recycle bin options
Place cookies you want to keep in the save list. Set to run when computer starts.

Additional (free) Run this time and monthly :
Microsoft OneCare Live, run “full service scan”
Updates windows, virus and spyware scan, disk cleanup, disk fragmentation (if needed), backup and clean registry, and check for open firewall ports

Malicious Software Removal Tool (run “full scan”)

Rootkit revealer: (advanced) Close all programs first and then run. Not all results will be malware! Google each item listed. Note any changes month to month.

Hello all I want to know what the best firewall software to use and why you recommended it. What’s the difference between Norton firewall, to Mcafee firewall, etc… thanks
In my opinion, the Windows XP firewall works great, I have never had any issues with it.
As you can probably tell I am a Windows user but Ive seen how good Ubuntu is and I decided to give it a go on a spare PC of mine.
Ive got it all installed, which used up some of the old grey matter.
I am however most impressed, especially seeing as its free.
Now to get back to my question.
I have heard you dont need antivirus software, firewall etc. with Linux. Is this true ?
If I do need to install some kind of security, could someone be so kind to point me in the right direction.
Many Thanks.
You’re highly unlikely to get a virus in linux. Here is a list of Linux viruses:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_computer_viruses_and_worms
If you compare that to the amount of viruses targeted at windows, it’s nothing.
If you’re paranoid, go to the add or remove programs thing. And search "virus scanner"
Also, don’t log on as ROOT (administrator) when you don’t have to. You’re extremely unlikely to get a virus though
