whats a good antivirus, firewall and antispyware software for my netbook?
What is the operating system on your netbook? There are many Linux netbooks out there along with the Windows models.
If it’s Linux, you can use avast, AVG, or ClamAV for antivirus. You can find instructions for installing Avast in Ubuntu on my blog at http://linugadgetech.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-to-install-avast-in-ubuntu.html
For firewall you can use Firestarter. http://www.fs-security.com/
For Windows XP I like AVG or avast for the antivirus. AVG is easier to set up automatic scanning. Get AVG from http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
For firewall I like ZoneAlarm – http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1025_update/zaSetup_en.exe
For antispyware try Spybot or AdAware.
AdAware – http://www.lavasoft.com/
SpyBot – http://www.spybot.com/index2.html
Most routers these days perform NAT and contain a firewall
Swiss cheese
USB devices, other computers, DVD’s, etc
Good admin password – not factory default
A firewall is not “a silver bullet” that takes care of all your security at once.
Use an advanced firewall that examines traffic on multiple layers to help protect you from malware.
Ask your qualified IT security professional which firewall they like best. That way, when there is an error message, your professional will already know what to do to fix the problem.
Software firewalls are programs that run on your workstation to protect you from other devices near you on the network.
You may choose to increase your protection with a more robust firewall that integrates with your anti-virus and anti-spyware solution.

It’s not bad but even if it came free with your computer you will have to pay for it eventually. McAfee is also known to decrease computer performance.
I would recommend using it until it expires, then uninstalling it and using the top freeware antivirus software:
I’m kind of concerned about what they’ll do to my laptop if they are all running at the same time in my laptop. That’s why I haven’t downloaded any of them yet but I have ESET NOD32 running. I feel like I need to change my anti-virus software to BitDefender. Is it a good idea to do so?
Do I really need Spy Sweeper when I already have an anti-virus software? Do I really need ZoneAlarm Pro when Windows already has a firewall? Also, will running all these software programs (BitDefender, Spy Sweeper, ZoneAlarm Pro) slow down my laptop?
Thanks!
Stopping spyware (‘malware’) is more than a one-time inoculation, folks.
This is about a weekly habit of cleaning ‘nasty dust bunnies’
from your personal computer.
In much the same way you clean your home with your favorite broom
and your favorite cleaning solvents, you will also need good tools
to clean spyware out of your PC.

For Windows XP? I don’t mind whether it’s free or paid-for.
I always used to use Norton Internet Security, which used to be good, but it’s gone downhill in the last year or so (the AutoProtect feature always brings up an error message whenever I switch the computer on), so I decided not to renew it.
Comodo Firewall Pro – For XP keeps hackers out of your system and all types of malware. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
Along with…
I’m a AVG fan because it just works, is fairly light on resources… Download… AVG 8.0.1 (Free Version) http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-AVGAntiVir&subj=dl&tag=button
For stubborn spyware or malware I recommend…
Spyware Doctor Starter Edition http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/google_pack/ works side-by-side with.. ThreatFire. http://www.threatfire.com/download/
You should use this when removing Norton… Its stubborn on removal with out it.
I’d like a free anti-virus and firewall for my pc. I am using Vista.
Thank you very much!
If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It’s cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
I advise against Norton anti-virus, it’s bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).
Comodo Firewall Pro is the best free firewall. Windows firewall only blocks incoming traffic. It does not stop outbound traffic – it wasn’t designed too. According to Microsoft, your anti-virus is responsible for detecting any type of malware (which could potentially send your private information to hackers without your knowledge).
Comodo Firewall Pro includes proactive malware defense for free. This will only help keep you safer. I also recommend Firefox, it’s a far better and safer alternative to Internet Explorer. If you add-on McAfee SiteAdvisor, it will warn you of potentially harmful sites.
this is my 1st firewall basicly its not a anti virus program so dont download it thinking it is the diffrence bettween anti virus and a Firewall is that a firewall will protect you from ip adresses attacking your computer this is basicly you basic internet security program.
