Do you need both firewall and anti virus software? I just removed some viruses using SpywareDoctor; however, SpywareDoctor does not have a firewall. I want to disable McAfee because it did not stop the viruses and it has a firewall. Is a firewall really necessary now that I have SpywareDoctor Anti virus software?
Yes. Firewalls protect against certain kinds of Internet attacks, but don’t protect against viruses. Anti-viruses protect against viruses, Trojans and worms that get in through emails and downloads.
Firewalls also try to keep malware that does get onto your machine from communicating with its master somewhere else.
If you’re angry at McAfee, there are several other free firewalls you can get instead.

My subscription to Norton internet security is soon to expire, I was wondering what is the best firewall/ antivirus software to use for a home PC?
I found that Norton slowed my computer down a fair bit, you could see the difference when Norton was turned off, are there any that do not effect the computers performance?
I am running XP home edition.
I will agree with cajunspike. You need one anti-virus, can’t use two together, and any of
AVAST, AVG, or AVIRA are good enough for home use and there are FREE
AVIRA though in free edition don’t have web and mail scan enabled.

I use ZONE ALARM from years and it’s one of the best as firewall.
But also you need spyware products, as spyware are different kind of mallicious program than viruses and anti-virus can’t detect them.

A trojan or spyware must put an entry in registry top operate corectly, so if you deny this entry ,you can keep spyware disabled even if it has installed in your computer.

The #1 thing behind hacked accounts is carelessness.
1. Use complex passwords that combine letters, numbers, and special characters (*@#$%).
2. If you receive ANY private messages or emails that request your password, no matter how official looking they are, don’t respond or click on links in them. They’re likely phishing scams. YouTube will never ask for such info in a message.
3. Be very careful clicking on links that take you off site. Much of the current hacking is being done via cookie catchers and cross-site scripting on malicious sites that links are leading to.
4. Make sure your computer security is up to date (antivirus, firewalls), and use anti-spyware as well. Spybot Search and Destroy is a good spyware detection program.
5. Use a hardware firewall as well as a software firewall if you can. In general, most routers you get will have a hardware firewall built in.
6. Password management software can help in not only generating randomized and complex passwords, but it can store them and enter them as well, and even fill in forms for you. This can help prevent keyloggers. One I use is Roboform.
7. If you’re using Mozilla Firefox as your browser, there’s a nifty add-on you can use called NoScript. This will only allow scripts from sites you allow (there will be a S with a circle around it at the bottom of your browser, where you can toggle which URL’s can use scripts). This is also a great way to block cookie catchers and cross-site scripting.
8. Always log out of your account when you are done with your session, to prevent visitors at your home from accessing your account, or worse, visitors in a public place (if you’re using a public computer, i.e. school, library, etc) from accessing your account.

what is the best firewall and antivirus software to have which is free?
best free firewalls according to recent matousec test are online armor free and comodo firewall pro. Best antivirus softwares accoring to detection rate are avira antivir classic and avast home edition. But always remeber that best would not always be to your liking. For example, These firewalls has 100% passing but always ask user for accept or reject questions so it may annoy some inexperienced users. Avira antivir classic annoys you with its update to premium ad, slow update and limited time offer but it has the best engine among free antivirus though. Avast need a registration. So It all boils down to personal preference. aside from protection, choose a security software that would suit your style.

As you can probably tell I am a Windows user but Ive seen how good Ubuntu is and I decided to give it a go on a spare PC of mine.
Ive got it all installed,which used up some of the old grey matter.
I am however most impressed, especially seeing as its free.
Now to get back to my question.
I have heard you dont need antivirus software, firewall etc. with Linux. Is this true ?
If I do need to install some kind of security, could someone be so kind to point me in the right direction.

You’re highly unlikely to get a virus in linux. Here is a list of Linux viruses:

If you compare that to the amount of viruses targeted at windows, it’s nothing.
If you’re paranoid, go to the add or remove programs thing. And search "virus scanner"
Also, don’t log on as ROOT (administrator) when you don’t have to. You’re extremely unlikely to get a virus though
